ONLINE OR HYBRID CLASSES

Let's Connect! Happily, Online Classes provide an option that fulfills some of the connection and belonging that you and I seek between the local environment and the wider world. The requirement to use Microsoft Teams meant facing a steep learning curve. As a tool, it has turned out to have a number of advantages including the ability to record classes, present slideshows and videos, share interactive whiteboards and chat live and more. I also used YouTube, Canva and many Google products and services to make slideshows for every class, record grades, give quizzes, etc. Students responded that the slideshows and class recordings were of real value as they could be easily reviewed.

Here are the results of a Google Forms poll taken of my students on September 29, 2022 which received 209 responses: Students were asked, “Which do you prefer? 1) Online Class 2) Classes held in a Classroom with a teacher present, or 3) Hybrid with Options to attend either online or in a classroom?

The students overwhelming preferred online classes. I have come to believe online classes are as effective or sometimes better than in-person classes. While I have always felt the non-verbal communications in a classroom environment can make for clearer monitoring of students’ understanding and inspire teaching, the combination of tools for online teaching have proven to be very effective and efficient. Being able to access videos, websites and search engines while a class is in session online has added a lot to the quality of teaching materials.

On a January 2023 exam, another group of students were asked for their opinion of online classes in a Google Form poll. Some of the responses follow:

ONLINE CLASSES  Based on your experience, what makes an effective Online Meeting or Online Class? Do you have any suggestions to improve the Online experience.

I don't have any issues, except for the network connection, which occasionally causes us to misunderstand what you're saying.

Online classes or online meetings can go back and look at the record when you have doubts or don't understand. But there is a problem with the internet. Before starting classes or meetings online, you should check in the router and equipment that are ready to use, such as headphones, microphones.

Online class effective because all of the students can easy to share their ideas or slide for presentation from their devices but in the classroom it hard to use the university devices sometimes.

In my opinion, I think the things that make an effective online meeting or online class is place because we mustn’t go to the building. When we must go to the classroom, sometimes we have problems such as Broken bikes or broken motorcycles make attend class late which made it difficult to study in the first part of the class. I suggested that we should choose the preference about class clearly.

In my opinion, studying online has its advantages that when I study a chapter don't understand or can't take notes in time. I can go back and look at the tutorial notes in MS team.

Studying online has its pros and cons. For example, if you're busy or sick, studying online allows you to look back on your teaching notes in MS Team, which will help you review what you've learned. The disadvantage is that slow internet cannot connect to the internet. While teaching, the internet went down. It makes us unable to understand while the teacher is explaining or teaching. We should have dedicated online classes for busy or sick people.

Good internet (but in dormitory is not pretty good often) / reducing the homework and have a few quiz will make student focus the content and learn more.(but should inform before for 1 week to give them to prepare)

I want Burapha University to develop a stronger Internet contract because this is very important to students' learning.

Let everyone turn on the camera when presenting the event.

Improve the internet, just the internet I think it make a lot of effective if we improve the internet.

It should be both online and onsite. Having an online class can record the class, it is help people who is busy, sick, or other reasons to not available for onsite class can study through internet. However, I think you should fix the basic internet issues or something basically because waiting for IT staff is completely waste time. Besides, sometime is cause of internet or devices issues that make people can't hear or understand each other, please be patient and find the real reason before judging.

The online class allows us to express our opinions more about learning and to quickly find information that interests us when in doubt about the subject. My suggestion is online class learning everyone should always be ready.

I think teaching and learning should be recorded regularly and provide reading files for students to read or review.

After more than a year of teaching online, I have become convinced that it is a highly effective and necessary alternative to in-classroom work. In fact, in many ways, it is a better choice. It allows students to study anywhere they may be, to review recordings, to communicate in a variety of ways that will be necessary in their future careers.

With the threat of future pandemics, illness, accidents, family problems, economic issues, lack of transportation, weather and the many other challenges that students and teachers face, online classes provide a much safer and more sympathetic situation than does the typical in-person classroom.

Having become disabled with a hip injury, teaching online has become my preference. If given a choice between teaching in a classroom or teaching online, as long as there is good internet access and a reasonably good computer and webcam available, I would choose to teach online and plan to do so in the years to come.

Online classes are increasingly being seen as the future of education, offering numerous advantages for students. Here are several reasons why online classes are considered the way forward:

  1. Flexibility and Convenience: One of the primary benefits of online classes is the flexibility they provide. Students can access course materials and lectures from anywhere at any time, as long as they have an internet connection. This flexibility allows students to set their own study schedules, accommodating their individual needs and responsibilities. They can learn at their own pace and balance their education with work, family commitments, or personal interests.

  2. Accessibility and Inclusivity: Online classes break down geographical barriers and provide equal access to education for students worldwide. Individuals who previously faced challenges attending traditional brick-and-mortar institutions due to location, physical disabilities, or other limitations can now participate in online learning. This inclusivity ensures that education reaches a broader and more diverse population, fostering a more equitable educational landscape.

  3. Customized Learning Experience: Online classes often offer a variety of multimedia resources, interactive platforms, and personalized learning tools. Students can tailor their learning experience to suit their preferred learning style and pace. They can revisit lectures, pause or rewind videos, and access additional resources, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Adaptive learning technologies can also provide targeted feedback and adapt the course content to individual needs, enhancing the overall learning experience.

  4. Enhanced Collaboration and Networking: Online classes promote collaboration among students through various online forums, discussion boards, and virtual group projects. This interaction fosters the exchange of ideas, encourages critical thinking, and develops teamwork skills. Additionally, online classes often bring together students from diverse backgrounds and geographical locations, allowing for a broader range of perspectives and cross-cultural learning experiences.

  5. Cost-Effectiveness: Online classes can be more cost-effective for students compared to traditional education. They eliminate expenses associated with commuting, accommodation, and other on-campus costs. Moreover, online courses often have lower tuition fees or offer financial aid options, making education more affordable and accessible for many individuals.

  6. Career Advancement Opportunities: Online classes provide students with the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge while continuing to work or fulfill other commitments. This flexibility enables individuals to upskill or reskill themselves, enhancing their career prospects and competitiveness in the job market. Online learning also allows professionals to pursue advanced degrees or certifications without having to interrupt their careers.

  7. Continuous Learning and Lifelong Education: Online classes support the concept of lifelong learning by enabling individuals to engage in education at any stage of life. Whether it's acquiring new skills, pursuing personal interests, or staying updated with the latest knowledge in their field, online classes offer a platform for continuous learning throughout one's lifetime.

While online classes may not entirely replace traditional classroom-based education, they undoubtedly offer a promising future for students. The flexibility, accessibility, customized learning experiences, collaboration opportunities, cost-effectiveness, and career advancement possibilities make online classes an attractive option for students seeking a modern and dynamic approach to education.
